Does Spotify Track Your Listening? What Powers Rooms, Receipts & Wrapped

Yes. Tracking your listening is core to how Spotify works — it’s what powers your recommendations, Discover Weekly, Wrapped, and every viral toy from Receiptify to the room generator.

What Spotify keeps track of

  • What you play — songs, artists, podcasts, and how often
  • How you listen — skips, repeats, saves, playlist adds
  • Context — time of day, device type, session length

This is described in Spotify’s own privacy policy and it’s the fuel for personalization — no listening data, no “made for you” anything.

Who can read that data?

Three tiers, and the difference matters:

  • Spotify itself — full access, obviously
  • You — through Wrapped, your stats, and a downloadable copy of your data from account settings
  • Third-party tools you approve — only the slices you grant on the consent screen, only after you say yes. This is the lane the room generator lives in: what it can and can’t see
The trend exists because the tracking exists. “How Spotify sees my room” is really “what my listening data implies about me, drawn as a bedroom” — the full breakdown is in the trend explainer.

Your actual controls

  • Private Session — temporarily keeps listening out of your recommendations and social feed
  • Manage Apps — see and remove every third-party tool you’ve ever connected: step-by-step here
  • Download your data — request a copy from account privacy settings to see what’s stored
Can I use the fun toys without any tracking?
The data-driven ones need data — that’s the deal. If you’d rather opt out entirely, our DIY room builder makes an internet bedroom with zero sign-in.
